Employers aren’t always required to use a Medical Review Officer for non-DOT testing, but most well-run programs do. A lab result alone can’t tell you whether a donor is taking a legitimately prescribed medication. An MRO review turns a raw lab result into a verified result that holds up when a donor challenges it, and it keeps donors’ medical information away from supervisors.
Non-DOT programs choose their own panels. We review standard 5-panel and 10-panel tests and expanded panels your lab offers, including expanded opioids, fentanyl, benzodiazepines, barbiturates and other drugs your program adds. We review urine, oral fluid and hair results when your laboratory reports them to an MRO.
For non-DOT testing, state law sets many of the rules: which employers can test, what notice is required, whether a confirmation test is required, and how marijuana results may be used. Rules on marijuana in particular vary widely from state to state, and some states protect off-duty use for certain employees. We follow your written policy and flag anything unusual during setup, but your program’s legal obligations are for you and your counsel to decide.
